Job Summary
The Assembly Technician & Technical Writer is a hybrid role responsible for the physical assembly, integration, and preliminary testing of complex electro-mechanical systems, while simultaneously developing and maintaining the manufacturing documentation that supports production. This role also bridges the gap between engineering design and the production floor by translating complex technical processes into clear, accurate standard operating procedures (SOPs), assembly guides, and rework instructions.
Key Responsibilities
- Mechanical & Electrical Assembly: Assemble complex sub-assemblies and full systems using hand tools, power tools, and specialized precision equipment.
- Technical Documentation & Writing: Write, format, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), manufacturing assembly instructions, and training manuals. Standardize formatting and terminology across all assembly documentation.
- Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wire routing diagrams, and written specifications.
- Wiring and Cabling: Perform point-to-point routing, crimping, soldering, and terminating of electrical cables and wire harnesses.
- Quality Inspection & First-Article Support: Conduct visual inspections and use precision measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers, multimeters) to verify that first-article and production builds meet mechanical and electrical tolerances.
- Engineering Redlines & Feedback Loop: Document build discrepancies, author engineering change orders (ECOs) or redlines, and collaborate closely with manufacturing and design engineers to optimize build documentation for future production runs.
- BOM Management: Verify part numbers against the Bill of Materials (BOM) to ensure all components are correct before beginning a build, and document any part substitution or inventory discrepancies.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; an Associate’s degree or technical certification in Electronics, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field is a plus.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in electro-mechanical assembly or precision manufacturing, with a proven track record of authoring technical documents, assembly manuals, or work instructions.
- Technical Writing Skills:
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical sequences clearly and concisely to floor technicians.
- Proficiency with documentation tools (e.g., Microsoft Word/Excel, PowerPoint and other related tools.)
- Ability to capture and embed clear visual aids (photographs, CAD screenshots) into documentation.
- Assembly Skills:
- Proficiency with standard hand/power tools and torque wrenches.
- Strong competence in reading electrical schematics and mechanical CAD drawings.
- Experience with wire harness routing, crimping tools, and basic soldering.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, maintain manual dexterity for fine-component assembly, and lift up to 40 lbs safely.
Compensation:We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. Individual base salaries are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our benefit package includes medical and dental coverage, equity participation plan, 401(k).
The range for this role varies based on experience and may be $32-$36 per hour.
